San Miguel County has been awarded funding from USDA to pursue food waste diversion and compost services within our region. In addition to waste diversion, SMC will use funds to support its ranchers, farmers, and other ag producers. They'll be working with Shavano Conservation District, CSU extension, WEEDC, Bruin Waste Management, and many other partners to scale food waste diversion and beneficial soil practices.
One of the program's major goals is to create long-term support and funding opportunities for our agricultural community. Some partners, such as Zero Food Print, already offer flexible grant opportunities to improve soil health. However, SMC needs to hear your perspective on what is needed before designing workshops and further grant opportunities. If you want to share your experience or interest in composting or soil health, please participate in this short survey - click here!
